Naturalising bulbs
Let nature do her work
What Are Naturalising Bulbs?
Naturalising bulbs—known in the Netherlands as Stinzen bulbs, a reference to the old estates and manor houses where they were traditionally planted—are a unique group of spring-flowering bulbs, tubers, and roots that establish themselves in the landscape and return year after year. Many of these species are native to the British Isles or have been cultivated since as early as the 16th century in the gardens of castles, estates, and country houses.
From mid-February to mid-May, these places are truly magical. You can witness vast, or sometimes intimate, carpets of flowers blooming in parklands, meadows, orchards, and beneath towering tree avenues—a breathtaking sight well worth a visit.

Naturalising bulbs are sustainable
While closely tied to historical landscapes, naturalising bulbs are a modern, eco-conscious choice. Planting them is a long-term investment—many species return for decades, even centuries, with minimal care.
These bulbs reproduce naturally through seeds or bulblets and require little maintenance, much like perennial plants. After flowering and seed dispersal, most disappear underground for the season, leaving room for other ground-cover plants. This makes thoughtful combinations essential for seasonal continuity and biodiversity.
As a bonus, some varieties—such as the elegant cyclamen or arum—also offer beautiful, ornamental foliage, adding year-round interest to your planting scheme.
